About DCI

Data Capture Institute (DCI) enjoys a worldwide reputation for technical excellence in the barcode and Automatic Identification (AIDC) field. This stems from our experience with over 2000 barcode driven solutions to government, industrial, and commercial process improvements. As "technology accelerators," we fill a middle ground in consulting. We're a specialized, niche resource focused on AIDC-related technologies and applications, and our projects radiate from the AIDC core. Our area of particular expertise is operational data collection and life-cycle item tracking.

We also offer expert consulting and litigation support to clients who become involved in intellectual property disputes. These clients seek our unique experience and perspective in order to resolve complex technical issues.

DCI was started in 1987 by barcode pioneer David J. Collins, founder of Computer Identics Corporation, the first company to design and manufacture barcode scanning equipment. David's history with barcode goes back to the early-1960s when he was project manager for the rail car identification project at Sylvania/GTE. He traveled to the far corners of the globe in pursuit of barcode's early adoption and in the process he earned a reputation as the "father" of the barcode industry. He has since received many honors for his work including a Congressional Citation. David's vast experience is augmented by others at DCI who bring expertise in the following areas:

  • Barcode symbology selection
  • Scanning technology
  • Label design and presentation
  • Data capture methods
  • Metadata correlation
  • Data analytics

DCI has scaled down over the past few years to concentrate on specific client organizations that are rolling out complex item tracking solutions. These clients understand the power of big data and are upgrading their IT architecture and operating processes to maximize insight into item value and performance by utilizing barcode and data analytics.
